How to Paint Over Dark Colors

Dark colors are notoriously difficult to paint over, especially if you want the wall to be much lighter. Though this process can be difficult and time-consuming, it is certainly possible. Here are some steps to take when you decide to paint over dark colors with lighter ones.

Preparation

Preparation is always a vital step before you begin painting. You will need to sand any rough edges until they’re smooth. Clean the walls and allow them to dry thoroughly before painting. It is important to do the basics, as well, such as running painter’s tape along the appropriate places and laying down covering for the flooring.

Primer

Primer is the most essential part of painting over dark colors. It is important to choose a high-quality, stain blocking primer for your wall. Though it may seem like a good idea to use a gray primer to cover dark colors, you’ll actually need a white primer. Gray primers are used to paint from lighter to darker colors. Once the primer has dried, you will need to apply a second coat of primer to wherever you can see darker colors bleeding through.

Paint

Rather than painting simply straight up and down, you should paint in M or W shapes. This will allow the paint to have a few seconds to dry before it is run over again. Additionally, paint as many coats as it takes to completely cover the prior paint. This may take a significant amount of time, so be patient with the painting process.
